UPF 50+ Rash Guards for Babies and Toddlers: What Actually Matters
Sunscreen has one weakness that nobody warns you about: it needs a cooperative child. Anyone who has tried to reapply lotion to a two-year-old halfway through a lake day already knows how that negotiation ends. Fabric does not need reapplying, does not sting eyes, and does not wash off in the water. That is the whole argument for a rash guard.
What UPF 50+ actually means
UPF stands for ultraviolet protection factor, and it describes fabric rather than skin. A UPF 50+ rating means the material lets through no more than roughly one fiftieth of the ultraviolet radiation hitting it. All of our rash guards are UPF 50+, which is the top band commonly used on clothing.
Two things worth knowing. The rating applies only to the skin the fabric actually covers, so shoulders and a back are protected while a neck, ears and the backs of hands are not. And a rash guard is a physical barrier, so unlike lotion it does not weaken over a few hours in the water.
Long sleeve or short sleeve
We make both, in the same colours, and the honest answer is that it depends on the day rather than on which one is better.
Long sleeve covers the arms, which is where a lot of the sun lands when a kid is crouched over a bucket at the edge of the water for an hour. It is the one we would pick for a full afternoon outdoors, and it doubles as a light layer when a breeze picks up off the lake in the evening.
Short sleeve is cooler, easier to get on and off a wriggling toddler, and less of a fight when it is soaking wet. If your kid is in and out of the water in short bursts, or you are pairing it with sunscreen on the arms anyway, short sleeve is plenty.

A word for the fluorescent green
It is the loudest thing we sell and that is deliberate. A bright green shirt is dramatically easier to pick out in a crowded beach or a busy pool than a black one, both above the surface and below it. If you have ever done that stomach-drop scan of a swimming area looking for your own child, you already understand why high-visibility colours are worth choosing on purpose.
Sizing: babies and kids only
Our rash guards run from 6 to 12 months at the small end up to 6 to 7 years at the top, through 12 to 18 months, 18 to 24 months, 2 to 3 years and 4 to 5 years. We do not make them in adult sizes, so if you are shopping for yourself this is not the collection.
The fit is standard rather than compression, and it pulls over the head with no zips or buckles. Because there is spandex in the blend there is a little stretch, but resist the urge to size up two bands: a rash guard that hangs loose lets water sluice underneath it and the sleeves end up dragging down the arms. Snug to the body is what you want.
How to wash one so it keeps working
Hand wash in cold water and line dry. That is on the care label for a reason: heat is the enemy of the elastane that gives a rash guard its stretch, and a hot dryer will cook it out of the fabric over a handful of cycles. Once the stretch is gone the shirt sags, and a sagging rash guard covers less.
Two extras that add whole seasons of life. Rinse it in fresh water after a chlorinated pool rather than letting it dry with the chlorine still in it. And dry it in the shade rather than pinned out in full sun all afternoon, which sounds fussy but is genuinely the difference between a colour lasting one summer and three.
What to put with it
A rash guard covers the torso and arms, so the gaps are the legs, the head and the back of the neck. Board shorts or swim shorts close the first gap, and there is a set of matching options in our swimwear collection.
